As a wildlife biologist, I strive to find meaningful work that allows me to observe nature directly and contribute to rigorous research with real-world conservation impact. After spending four months in Antarctica last year, conducting population censuses of multiple penguin and pinniped species, I knew that the fragile Antarctic ecosystem would hold a lasting place in both my heart and my career. I am thrilled to be volunteering with Oceanites for the first time this year - their long-term research and framework exemplify how each of us can use direct observation to better understand ecosystems and identify species that need targeted conservation efforts to thrive.

Since 2017, I have worked as a polar expedition guide, in less than ten years, I have witnessed changes of Antarctic ecosystems and penguin distribution in certain religions. Only with more reliable data, we could develop better regulations, to help this fragile ecosystem maintain better balance in the face of climate change. That’s why Oceanites means so much to penguins, also to me.

Philip Trathan

The Antarctic Peninsula is changing rapidly. It is one of the fastest warming parts of the Southern Ocean, and its one of the locations where recovering populations of baleen whales are regularly observed feeding. Monitoring change in the biological communities that use the Peninsula is therefore vital, if we are to properly manage industrial fishing for Antarctic krill. Oceanites has collated the most comprehensive time series of penguin counts for the region, and this is proving increasingly valuable for managers. I'm therefore especially pleased to be able to contribute to this work, including in the field and by representing Oceanites at meetings of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, the management body responsible for regulating fisheries in Antarctica.

Emily Ritter

Protecting imperiled birds and teaching the public about how we can save species from extinction is my life purpose. Oceanites has given me the opportunity to educate people about bird surveying as a conservation method in an area where threats such as climate change and disease are devastating bird populations dramatically. Previously, I have volunteered for coastal raptor surveys and dabbled in seabird work, so I am looking forward to counting penguins for the first time and sharing this experience.

Undoubtedly, Antarctica's penguin populations are being heavily impacted by climate change, but now, we are seeing the impacts of recently introduced highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). My passion is wildlife disease, and I am deeply concerned about the reports of HPAI outbreaks in Antarctic seals and the possibility of spread to penguin populations. Oceanites is a frontline observer of this worrying outbreak, so I’m driven by Oceanites' commitment to reporting the conditions of Antarctica’s species, which will inform the management of HPAI.

James Bunyan

Volunteering with Oceanites is deeply meaningful to me because it allows me to use my ecological focussed drone expertise and passion for the natural world to support long-term ecological research at a time when climate change and biodiversity loss demand urgent action. Helping to map and monitor penguin colonies feels like a tangible way to contribute to the protection of a fragile ecosystem. For me, being part of Oceanites means joining a mission I believe in wholeheartedly—one grounded in science, conservation, and care for Antarctica’s future.

I first came across Oceanites in 2018 during my first season in Antarctica. Since then I have closely followed the amazing work and impact that Oceanites is having with their penguin counting, and use of newer technologies to advance long-term and future understanding. Personally, and as a scientist, I was thrilled to join the Oceanites team, with a whole hearted belief that this dedicated team of penguin counters will make a difference in conserving not only the penguins but the awe-inspiring Antarctic environment.

Working with Oceanites is meaningful to me because I get to use my passion for ecology and skills as a UAV pilot to contribute to a vitally important long-term environmental monitoring project in one of the most incredible ecosystems in the world.
